Savvy TIFF Fashion: Part I
If you love the glitz and glam of Hollywood, then the Toronto International Film Festival is probably well marked in your calendar. I personally love the buzz of the Festival. I love cramming as many screenings into each day or night as I can, because I have yet to see a film I didn’t love at TIFF. Once you’ve mastered rushing films and standing in line at the box office at 6:30 AM for daily ticket releases, your only other obstacle will be deciding what to wear as you rub elbows with celebrities, press and industry professionals. Never fear, because as usual we here at She’s So Savvy have you covered, and as always, we’ll show you how to TIFF without breaking bank.
Any good wardrobe is built upon solid staples. We all have them, our favourite jeans, our most well fitting blazer and our go-to power pearls (or some such variation). Dressing for TIFF is no different. We asked Ofra Nissani, co-owner of Toronto’s Boa, for her thoughts on the five most essential pieces for creating your perfect look(s) during the Festival.
And the nominees are:
- An envelope clutch to keep all your essentials (like your autograph book)
- Nude heels
- A statement necklace in bold, trendy colours for fall
- A well tailored blazer
- A metallic belt
The great news is since most of these items are already wardrobe staples, the odds are pretty good that you own at least one of them, which rules out having to hit the mall before squeezing in some celebrity stalking.
Generally speaking, there are two types of events that take place during the Festival; screenings and parties. Often, you might find yourself partaking in a blend of both. It’s important to look as savvy as you are when you’re attending these events, especially if they are work related. You don’t want to be the one who shows up in jeans if everyone is wearing cocktail dresses.
Transforming your daytime look into a night-time look appropriate for TIFF’s evening events doesn’t require a suitcase or a team of professionals, just different combinations of the 5 items we mentioned above.
Let’s start with Gala’s, after-parties, and Press and Industry screenings (we should be so lucky!)
If you’ve ever been to the Festival, you know that schedule is quite packed especially if you’re trying to catch more than one film or event in a day. It doesn’t leave much time to revamp yourself after work or in between events and with this look you don’t have to. You can wear your LBD to work during the day with a conservative blazer over top. Keep your heels the same (If they are comfortable enough. If not, you could even do flats or a lower kitten-esque heel for daytime and power-lunching).
When it’s time to hit the red carpet (or side entrance): Ditch your blazer, throw on some glamorous earrings, grab your most fabulous clutch, pucker up for some dramatic red lipstick and you’re ready to go!
TIFF Screenings
Most screenings will have cast members, directors, writers or producers in attendance. It gives them a chance to see how much the audience loves (they hope!) their movie. This makes each screening very dynamic, especially because the movie is usually followed by Q&A with the audience. With our tips for how to vamp up your look for a TIFF screening, you won’t be shy to raise your hand and shout out your question, dare we say even make eye contact with some Hollywood stud!
And there you have it! It’s as simple as pairing up some sexy basics in new and interesting combinations, layering up or down and owning your look! Next week, we’ll bring you more from Ofra Nissani and the lovely ladies of Boa as we show you how to get TIFF looks for less. Stay tuned! And let me know if you see Ryan Gosling anywhere…
